This AM radio still costs thousands of dollars—why?
My Dad put his Potomac FIM-21 Field Intensity Meter on the bench.
In 1986, this radio cost $1,950-which is nearly $6,000 today! (And this isn't even the most expensive AM radio today-there's a newer version for $15,000!)
It measures the field intensity of AM radio signals in volts, and a calibrated unit like this one can be used for official readings sent to the FCC for broadcast stations in the US.

The Center for Automotive Research says it would cost the industry $3.8 billion dollars to solve interference problems in EVs to put AM radio in new cars. DO NOT TRY THIS. Seriously. That out of the way, we devised a test to see just how dangerous the RF energy can be on an AM tower, if someone were to touch it while it was transmitting. This tower was operating under 10 kW. There are many AM towers broadcasting at _much_ higher power levels, so they are even _more_ dangerous. RF burns can kill, and there's a reason there are fences around these ...

A friend and I climbed halfway up an AM tower in our early teens. No idea what the power rating was. Obviously never got zapped, but we attracted cars passing on the nearby highway and hurried down. It was long before cell phones so we left before cops got there, if they did.

I had a hole blasted in my thumb through a glove from a 1kw transmitter, the owner shut the tower down (so he thought, got sidetracked by our conversation). When I got outside to the tower I thought I could still "feel" the energy, and instead of walking 200 ft back to the headend or walking the same distance to the truck for the voltage indicator, just to make sure (With my gear on in 100deg heat after all I saw him open the panel on the transmitter where the breaker is) I decided to skim the ring with my thumb.. not smart.

I live in Sweden where there have not been any AM transmission except for one station aimed at listeners in other countrys, in a very long time. We have our emergency broadcasts on the FM band, and with RDS. Even so, I am a ham-radio operator, and I used to use my radio mobile, in the car, it worked great on older cars and on my last diesel, but stopping at a red light next to a modern car more or less wipes out anything on AM. We also had some "information-billboards" on some highways that were so bad they got banned close to airports because they interfered with AM on the airband. I think (sadly) the time of AM och HF-bands are close to over.

    1) That is not transmitting on Channel 5. It transmits on channel 35, which is situated between 596 and 602 MHz, not "599 MHz". 2) That 77Mbit/s link on the STL/TSL includes a majority of IP data which has nothing to do with what is fed to the transmitter, which for ATSC runs at 19.392658Mbit/s The rest of that link is available for the engineers to watch boring UA-cam videos. 3) The "lines" are not "streamed". The picture is an MPEG(2) compressed transport stream which sends data containing the whole picture(s) (from each main/sub channel) at one time. We no longer transmit line-based video. If one were to break down this data to a more component level, we're actually sending big blocks of the 29.97/59.94 frames per second video. That's why when you see poor video reception, you get huge blocks of video that tear, delay, distort, and generally look terrible - not individual lines. 4) Too bad for the poor engineers who have to service that GatesAir. They should have purchased a Rohde & Schwarz. The R&S is on such a higher level of "cool" and technical superiority that comparatively, this GatesAir is a Pentium III and the latest R&S THU is a 12th generation i9. I guess Mr. Carcopo just needed to have things to do though... which is good for him. 5) Those things hanging in the ceiling are not just waveguide. It's technically a hybrid combiner / magic-tee. this allows the transmitter to be switched so that one side of that transmitter can be dedicated fully to the antenna without losing 50% of the active transmitter to heat a dummy load, which would result in only 25% of the normal power reaching the antenna instead of 50% using a magic tee system like this. 6) Don't let OSHA see you opening that transfer switch without wearing arc flash gear. Surely you two donned that arc flash gear before opening that door ;) 7) Those "weird bowties" on the tower are the original channel 5 antenna. It is actually called a "batwing" antenna, and this one operates on the actual channel 5 (76-82 MHz).

And still nothing to watch on TEE VEE. I've been a decimated TV antenna for decades but watch very little broad television anymore. Maybe one or two hours of OTA TV a month, if that! The broadcast network are essentially dead. Local news and programming is beyond awful. Even PBS has fallen way, way down in quality programming. THIS is the result of consolidation of television stations into the hands of a few corporate owners such as Sinclair, Nextstar and others. Just like FM and AM both radio bands are dead to me.

Calibration stickers and docs only means something if calibration cycles are maintained according to the manufacturers specs. Pass the required calibration cycle date and the calibration is no longer valid. It sounds like dad it trying really hard to sell it.. Hyping it up to get the price up. Regarding something having a particular collectors value, it's value is only what someone is willing to pay for it at any given moment.

    • @JeffGeerling

I can guarantee he doesn't want the price to go up on these things-it's hard enough getting budget to keep a 60 year old unit maintained and calibrated. The newer ones (with fancy digital features and GPS) cost even more!

Cool collectible radio, however I can do the same thing with my cheap AM pocket radio by turning it. I know where the null is, so I know where the transmitter is and my signal strength meter is my ears. I do really like that tunable external loop antenna, more than the radio. I might build one of my own. Have been meaning to do it some day. You can also enhance reception of a radio by putting it near the loop even without a connection.

  • @sfperalta

Knowing that the cost of the AM/FM radio components was trivial, I realized that the cost was in making the electric motors in the car low-mission. AM is very sensitive to local electronic fields (like those generated by coils or motors). A famous use of this was in the early days of hobbyist computing, where someone demonstrated a "music" program using a MITS Altair 8800 computer and an AM radio. Just by manipulating the computer program paths, they could play recognizable tunes on a nearby AM radio. How interesting that demonstration becomes today as we move into the EV era!

The headache and cost of getting a replacement including sending the unit back to the states to get a replacement calibrated to it.
